Unit 5: Tapping – Manufacturing Processes 4-5

Tapping is the process of cutting a thread inside a hole so that a cap screw or bolt can be threaded into the hole. Also, it is used to make thread on nuts. Tapping can be done on the lathe by power feed or by hand. Regardless of the method, the hole must be drilled with the proper size tap drill and chamferred at the end. Tapping Procedures

Threading (manufacturing) - Wikipedia

Thread Milling has a better thread quality than tapping as it offers better chip evacuation. Tapping uses a tool the same size as the thread, forcing the chip through the thread for evacuation. Subtractive methods Thread cutting. Thread cutting, as compared to thread forming and rolling, is used when full thread depth is required, when the ...

The Ultimate Guide to Machining Thread | RapidDirect Blog

Milling can be used to make internal or external threads. Threads cut using the milling method come with a high level of accuracy. It is desirable to use this method when the thread's pitch is too coarse for a die. Many machinists consider milling more effective than threading on a lathe.

Thread Milling vs. Tapping: Advantages & Disadvantages

The primary advantage of thread milling is the ability to control the fit. A threaded hole is milled at a high RPM and the tool helixes into a previously-milled hole. So, the machine operator has the ability to adjust thread size using a strategy similar to using an end mill, rather than a drill bit to make a hole.

Machining - Material removal processes

Machining is a term used to describe a variety of material removal processes in which a cutting tool removes unwanted material from a workpiece to produce the desired shape. The workpiece is typically cut from a larger piece of stock, which is available in a variety of standard shapes, such as flat sheets, solid bars, hollow tubes, and shaped beams.
