The Australian Pork CRC investigated the influence of hammer mill screen size and grain source (wheat or sorghum) on the growth performance of male grower pigs. Processing of grain prior to feed manufacturing is common practice to reduce particle size, thereby increasing the surface area of the grain susceptible to the pig's digestive enzymes.

The effect of hammer mill screen size on processing parameters and particle size of milled sorghum were examined. Sorghum grains were ground through two levels of hammer mill screen size: 2 mm and 6 mm and then subsequently fractionated by size on a set of eight sieves ranging from 0.045 mm to 2.8 mm.

Factors such as moisture content of the grain, condition of the hammers and/or screens (hammermill) or the condition of the corrugations (roller mills) can produce widely varying results. In addition, the quality of the grain or other materials being processed can have a dramatic impact on the fineness and quality of the finished ground products.

Regarding hammer mill screen size, the impact on oil recovery depended on both maturity and cultivar. For Arbequina, no effect of the screen size was observed for MI = 1.6 when no enzymes were added.
